BETSY CROSBY (1804), LITTLE POND CEMETERY. Betsy Crosby’s husband was one of the most prominent men in Sandwich, while her father was equally prominent in nearby Moultonborough, serving as an officer in the Revolutionary War. This stone for Betsy was erected at least nine years after her death, as the epitaph below her own records the deaths of her children Valeria (1802), Priscilla (1808), and Charles and Robert (1813).

NATHANIEL FRENCH (1822), LITTLE POND CEMETERY. Nathaniel French was the son of one of Sandwich’s most influential early citizens, Ezekiel French. Born July 9, 1781, he married Grace Crosby, and together they had two sons. French earned the title of captain from his militia service. His gravestone was carved by Matthias Weeks and is one of his most impressive stones.
